As the pioneer missionary Jim Elliot set sail for Ecuador, he reminisced in his journal about his boyhood love of boats and sailing. He remarked how strange--or is it?--that childhood dreams should find their fulfillment in God's mission. We feel the same way about England. From an early age, we possessed a love for England, its history, its literature, and its people. As teenagers, both of us sensed a call to international missions, wrongly assuming God would take us somewhere completely foreign to our childhood loves and interests. God's providence, however, is a story best read backwards. God was the One planting desires, cultivating delights, orchestrating offhand conversations, and directing our lives to bring us to this point.
K.J. first felt he would be a foreign missionary while spending a summer in Ukraine. From there he returned to Alabama and began a course of studies at the University of Mobile to prepare him for international ministry. He met Lynn his first week in college, and the two of them built a friendship upon their common loves and callings. What happened next is one of the great love stories of our time! They graduated and were married the same month, packing up their lives and moving to Southern Seminary. K.J. took an Adv. M.Div. in Theology at the end of their four years in Louisville, Kentucky. He has since had the privilege of serving alongside his father for more than six years at Open Door Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. During that time, he has led the best group of college students currently living anywhere, cultivated international partnerships in Haiti, Cuba, and France, as well as dabbled in the publishing world.
Lynn has played an equal (if not greater) part in the Pugh's journey to Yorkshire. On a whim--or was it?--she asked K.J. if they could spend their tax return on a 7th anniversary trip to the UK. On that trip, the Lord began to show her that this was the mission field to which He was calling her. Lynn returned home praying for the Lord to open the door to England. It was years of praying that led to an unexpected call from Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. The door had opened, and her prayers were being answered. You can follow Lynn's journey on her blog, Wherever I Am, as well as sample her love for photography and capturing life wherever she is, and whomever she is with.
Ella was born in Louisville, Kentucky, at a time when the state slogan was "Unbridled Spirit." She certainly embodies it! Ella is our gymnast and dancer. She is a natural at both. Ella takes after her mother in so many ways, not the least is her love of reading and books. We pray that our mission in England will fill her heart with the greatest story ever told and cause her to love its Hero, who gives us His Spirit without measure.
James is our entertainer. He laughs more than any other kid you know. He is always the life of the party. He loves telling jokes, sword fighting, and playing games. We pray that in Yorkshire he will come to see a joy worth fighting for and a Jesus who fights for his joy.
The Pughs arrived in Yorkshire on November 1st, 2014, and God continues to write their story. K.J. serves as the pastor of the church alongside Tim Chester.
While the church very sacrificially provides the bulk of our salary, we still depend on your generosity to make up that crucial remainder which enables us to minister here.
If you want to be part of God's provision for us and for advancing Christ's Kingdom in North Yorkshire, we would be glad to have you partner with us.
