In Yorkshire, only 0.9% of its 5.3 million people are active in a church of any kind, and only 0.4% are connected with an evangelical church where the gospel is loved and preached. By contrast, the least churched city in the USA (Burlington, VT) still has 24% of its residents active in a church of some kind. This means the least reached part of the USA is still over 25 times more churched than the Yorkshire average, and certain areas of North Yorkshire fall well below the average. In the Vale of York (which runs between the North Yorkshire Dales and Moors), there are over 300 towns and villages. By best estimates less than a dozen of these have their own local churches where a non-Christian would encounter the good news about Jesus clearly spoken and attractively lived out.
The need in Yorkshire is great...but like water rushing to fill a void, the gospel is advancing in Yorkshire. New churches are being planted in areas long devoid of a gospel witness. Grace Church Boroughbridge is one of those new churches--small and weak by most measures but committed to a vision of seeing the Vale of York littered with communities of light. God has been incredibly gracious to such a little band of believers in the church's short history. Out of this group has come a church planting network for North Yorkshire as well as a family commissioned and sent as church-planting missionaries to France. To this church, the Lord has called Tim Chester, a pastor and Christian author from Sheffield, and K.J. Pugh, a pastor and church planter from Alabama. With the growing ministry team, the time seems to be right for investing in more gospel works...but we can't do this alone.
We're looking for Christians who live in the Vale of York and who have a heart to see their neighbours come to know and love Jesus but lack support to do it. If that's you, we want to be a church to help you reach your village. Just get in touch, and let's begin a conversation about starting a new work where you live.
For those living outside of Yorkshire, you can also be a part of the work by praying and supporting those God is calling here. The Pughs are the first who've come relying on gospel partners. Learn how you can partner with them and with others in needy North Yorkshire.
